Hone What’s Known

One of the most obvious yet overlooked strategies for enhancing confidence is to simply reinforce success around current skills or tasks. By consciously cultivating the experience of effectiveness around what they’re currently doing, you can help employees internalize greater certainty around their capacity and knowledge. This elevates their trust in their own ability to perform predictably.

While not always the most glamorous or exciting vehicle for growth, repeating a task or activity can hone your employees’ capabilities and create that sense of assurance, fluency, and next-level mastery that inspires greater confidence. But this doesn’t occur as a result of mindless repetition. If that were the case, a lot more of us would have high degrees of confidence.

What’s required is conscious, intentional practice—as well as guidance and support from a manager like you who is committed to enhancing confidence.

Kai manages a team of recruiters. Leland has been a solid performer for nearly two years until recently, when a few high-profile setbacks have seemed to leave him a little tentative and unsure of himself. Conversations between Kai and Leland uncovered that Leland’s confidence had been shaken and that addressing this dimension was a priority for him and his career.

So, Kai did three things. First, Kai coached Leland to bring greater presence to his work by observing his conversations with candidates, noting the questions and strategies that surfaced great information—and those that didn’t. Then, Kai touched base so that Leland could summarize his observations, what he did well, and what he could improve. At first, they met daily, then tapered off to weekly once Kai had the sense that Leland had formed the reflection habit. Finally, Kai invited Leland to share his recruiting best practices with a new team member. Within a few months, Leland’s confidence wasn’t just restored; it was boosted.
